Pine Barrens

The sandy, pine-forested region of southern New Jersey that grows the state's blueberries and cranberries.

The Pine Barrens is the large sand-soil pine forest region covering much of southern New Jersey, and its acidic wet ground is what makes the area suited to blueberries and cranberries rather than row crops. Several festivals in this directory sit inside it and take their theme directly from that agriculture: the Whitesbog Blueberry Summer Fest in Browns Mills on June 19 and the Chatsworth Cranberry Festival on October 17 and 18. Expect sand roads and long straight drives between towns out here.

Also known as: the Pinelands.
