The Pine Barrens is a large region of sandy soil and pine forest covering much of southern New Jersey. Its acidic, wet ground suits blueberries and cranberries. Festivals such as the Whitesbog Blueberry Summer Fest at Whitesbog Village in Browns Mills (select dates, the first June 19) and the Chatsworth Cranberry Festival in the Pinelands village of Chatsworth (October 17 and 18) take their theme from that agriculture.
