In a showmanship class the judge evaluates the exhibitor rather than the animal: grooming, control, ring position, how the handler moves the animal and answers questions. It is the class where 4-H members are graded on their own skill, which makes it the most instructive one to watch if you want to understand what the kids in the ring have actually been doing all year. Conformation or breed classes, by contrast, judge the animal itself.
